Leigh Walk-In Centre
You can see an experienced nurse for treatment of minor injuries and illnesses, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, 7am to 9pm at Leigh Walk-In Centre, Leigh Infirmary, The Avenue, Wigan. Alternatively you can telephone them on 01942 264000. The centre offers treatment for minor illnesses including sore throats, infections/rashes, viral infections, minor burns/wounds, fractures, sprains and X-rays of upper/lower limbs, eye problems, minor head injuries etc. You do not need an appointment.Wigan GP Alliance
In July 2015 Wigan GP Access Alliance launched a new service to increase patient access to GPs weekday evenings and weekends. Patients will be seen at designated ‘hubs’ in the borough. Currently there are 5 HUB sites (Shevington, Pemberton, Atherton, Tyldesley & Ashton) with more HUBs expected to open in the near future.Patient can call 01942 482848 to book a GP appointment at one of the HUBs. Appointments will be available:
- 6:30pm to 8pm Monday to Friday and
- 10am to 4pm Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays
The Wigan GP Extended Hours now offer appointments with Nurses for a variety of services and reviews between 6:30pm and 8pm weekdays and 10am to 4pm Saturdays.
The appointments are for:
- Cervical Smears
- Contraceptive pill checks – (not the depo provera injection)
- Long Term Condition reviews: COPD reviews, Asthma reviews, Diabetes reviews – (annual bloods need to be done a few days before the review date), Peripheral Arterial Disease reviews, Ischaemic Heart Disease reviews – (annual bloods need to be done a few days before the review date), Stroke reviews, Atrial Fibrillation reviews, Heart Failure reviews

Out-of-hours services are generally busy so please think carefully before asking to see a doctor and only do so if you genuinely cannot wait until the surgery re-opens.

Sign language interpreter service
Wigan patients can access the services of a Sign Language interpreter to accompany them to GP appointments when needed. To do this patients contact Action on Hearing on either 0845 685 8000 or email them at communication.services@hearingloss.org.uk. They’ll require basic information ie. patient’s name, where the appointment is, the type of appointment and they’ll make the necessary arrangements to accompany the patient to their appointment.
Interpreter service
For patients whose first language isn’t English and who need the services of an interpreter at their GP appointment, the practice can access the services of Language Line. This is a telephone interpreter service. If you require this service at your consultation, please let a member of staff know when you book your appointment.
